Parental Information and Resource Center (PIRC)

The Georgia PIRC is a key initiative in the Communities In Schools toolkit of resources.  It operates with federal funding and helps parents become actively involved in their kid's education through numerous early childhood programs. Partnerships are developed with schools, social service agencies and others to enhance services.  The Georgia Parental Engagement Coordinator, Julie Hollis, serves on the Georgia state school superintedent's Parent Advisory Council.

GA PIRC, in partnership with CIS and other organizations, will conduct their annual conference August 30-September 1 at the Georgian Aquarium.  For more information, contact Julie Hollis at jhollis@cisgeorgia.org.

This year's focus is geared toward expanding the partnership with the PTA, helping Title I parents and failing schools.  During last year's annual conference, parent advocate Shawna Hayes-Tavares conducted a class and provided tips regarding resources available.  Shawna's advice helps parents navigate the school system, understand their rights and how the resources can help their kids be successful in school.Shawna is the mother of 4, two special needs and two gifted children and serves on numerous school and community boards.

Through comprehensive research-based programs, parents learn techniques and skills that help kids succeed in school and prepare for life.  PIRC uses key researched-based programs including Parents As Teachers (PAT) and Parents Assuring Student Success (PASS).  PAT is a parent education and family support program that serves families throughout pregnancy and continues until their kids enters kindergarten.  PASS helps parents improve their ability to nurture a positive attitude towards learning through seven essential study skills: concentration, listening, time management, note-taking, memory, thinking and reading.
