AmeriCorps Tutorial Program
The Reading Tutorial program has been funded by a grant from the Corporation for National Service for nine years and administered by the Georgia Commission on Service and Volunteerism. The AmeriCorps Reading Tutorial Program has grown from 3 local network affiliate sites in 1995 to 15 and expanded its scope to include both elementary and middle school students.
The CISGA AmeriCorps Reading Tutorial program provides an opportunity for part-time members to intervene and tutor low-achieving elementary school students and improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary recognition, and basic writing skills. The program helps increase the graduation rates by improving reading and math scores and strengthening academic skills.
Students receive one-on-one tutoring or small group sessions at 30-minute daily intervals each week. As tutors, members also provide support services to students to increase their time spent on independent reading.
Members provide services to Burke, Candler, Ben Hill, Dodge, Glascock, Hart, Jenkins, Laurens, Stephens, and Troup counties.
CIS AmeriCorps Celebrates Training and Recognition Day

CIS of GA AmeriCorps team with facilitator,
Walter Jackson, (center back).
Communities In Schools of Georgia AmeriCorps held its Training and Recognition Day on May 30 in Macon, GA. There were over 20 members that participated. The theme of the day “Be Prepared” set the stage for two workshops which were facilitated by Walter Jackson of Hands on Atlanta. From the start, Mr. Jackson kept members engaged in conversations and projects around Civic Engagement and Life after AmeriCorps… all with the aim of getting them to draw from the wide range of experiences they had gathered over the months as AmeriCorps members.
