Adolescent Family Life (AFL)
The Communities In Schools Adolescent Family Life Demonstration Project is aimed at reducing the number of adolescents in targeted communities who are engaged in premarital sexual activity. There are 18 schools and approximately 6,000 students who participate in the AFL project in Burke, Douglas, Dublin, and Chatham counties.
Key Program Components: abstinence education, small group mentoring, service learning, parent workshops, evaluation.
The AFL project supports, develops, evaluates, and utilizes curricula designed to provide students and their parents with abstinence information and activities. It integrates school-based abstinence education and small group mentoring. The outcomes of students receiving only abstinence education (control group) in comparison to those receiving both abstinence education and small group mentoring (treatment group) will be evaluated.
