AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA)
The CIS of Georgia AmeriCorps*VISTA project is funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and is focused on building the capacity of local CIS affiliates. Communities In Schools employs a community development approach to unifying the existing resources of communities around children, families and schools. In each participating affiliate, the CIS of Georgia AmeriCorps*VISTA member serves as a Strategies Coordinator leading efforts such as volunteer recruitment, marketing, grant writing and special events. Project plans designed to address most pressing capacity needs for the CIS affiliate drive the work of the VISTA. Each member’s efforts impact program implementation and sustainability of student support services such as mentoring and reading proficiency skills building and other programming for at-risk youth.
VISTA members are recruited, selected and receive ongoing training and coaching from the CIS affiliate Executive Director and the CISGA Project Supervisor. Members have proven to be effective in their role. They align their work with the AmeriCorps VISTA Core principles of anti-poverty programming, community empowerment, sustainable solutions and capacity building.
Four local CIS affiliates host AmeriCorps VISTA members throughout the state of Georgia during the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
CIS of Carrollton/Carroll County
CIS of Fitzgerald/Ben Hill County
CIS of Milledgeville/Baldwin County
Dodge Connection-CIS of Dodge County
