CIS Program Results
During the 2008-2009 school year, the Georgia Communities In Schools network of 50 CIS local network affiliates provided resources and services to students at 617 school and community-based sites throughout Georgia.
Students Served. During the school year, CIS programs provided services to a total of 173,093 Georgia students (unduplicated) throughout the course of the year. Support included intensive sustained services to 28,911 at-risk students in need of on-going supports and whole-school prevention services and short-term intervention services to 163,813 students.
Parent and Adult Service. CIS affiliates provide support to adults in their communities as a way to support schools and students. Adult services during 2008-2009 included:
- direct services (such as parent education) to 9,748 parents;
- parent involvement support services to over 48,000 parents;
- services to over 3,900 other adults in CIS communities;
- services through our network of Parental Information and Resource Centers, with regional hubs providing support in implementation of parent engagement services.
Volunteer Resources. CIS affiliates work to bring volunteer resources to support students and schools. CIS efforts during 2008-2009 yielded:
- 3,375 mentors for students;
- 6,383 other volunteers providing services such as tutoring;
- 149,770 hours of volunteer services to students and schools;
- 63,320 hours of service by CIS AmeriCorps and VISTA Volunteers to their CIS communities;
- 210,090 total hours of volunteer support in CIS communities.
- In all, volunteer service contributions of $4,098,846 as estimated by Independent Sector.
Academics
Among students coming to CIS with a history of poor academic performance or past academic failure, improvement occurred in academic performance for:
70.1% of elementary school students
59.1% of middle school students
70.4% of high school students.
Progress Towards Graduation
95.1% of at-risk high school students served by CIS stayed in school or graduated.
Attendance

74.3% of students missing 10 days or more per year prior to CIS improved their attendance.
Average Gain: Students increased their average daily attendance to 91.4% during CIS from 87.7% prior to entry in the program, an average gain of 6.7 days of attendance per year.
