CIS Program Results
During the 2007-2008 school year, the Georgia Communities In Schools network of 51 CIS local network affiliates provided resources and services to students at 697 school and community-based sites throughout Georgia.
Students Served. During the school year, CIS programs provided services to a total of 162,998 Georgia students (unduplicated) throughout the course of the year. Support included intensive sustained services to 31,180 at-risk students in need of on-going supports and whole-school prevention services and short-term intervention services to 142,368 students.
Parent and Adult Service. CIS affiliates provide support to adults in their communities as a way to support schools and students. Adult services during 2007-2008 included:
- direct services (such as parent education) to 10,453 parents;
- parent involvement support services to over 32,000 parents;
- services to over 1,000 other adults in CIS communities;
- services through our network of Parental Information and Resource Centers, with regional hubs providing support in implementation of parent engagement services.
Resource Development
· Funds Generated. CISGA received $1,495,623 from the Georgia Department of Education in 2008. In return, CIS generated:
· $5,338,416 in cash contributions;
· $27,206,645 in restricted grant funds;
· $1,769,662 in in-kind contributions.
AN AVERAGE OF $21.94 WAS GENERATED FOR EVERY DOLLAR CIS RECEIVED FROM THE GEORGIA DOE.
· Volunteer Resources. CIS affiliates work to bring volunteer resources to support students and schools. CIS efforts during 2007-2008 yielded:
· 3,654 mentors for students;
· 5,242 other volunteers providing services such as tutoring;
· 142,465 hours of volunteer services to students and schools;
· 72,000 hours of service by CIS AmeriCorps and VISTA Volunteers to their CIS communities;
· 212,465 total hours of volunteer support in CIS communities.
· In all, volunteer service contributions of $4,184,212 as estimated by Independent Sector.
IN TOTAL, CIS AFFILIATE FUNDRAISING AND VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT EFFORTS RESULTED IN $24.74 RAISED THROUGH GRANTS, CASH, IN-KIND DONATIONS AND SERVICE CONTRIBUTIONS FOR EVERY DOLLAR RECEIVED FROM GaDOE IN 2008.
Academics
Nearly two-thirds of all students entering CIS with history of academic difficulties improved.
Over 95% of elementary and middle school students improved their reading skills while participating in CIS.
Progress Towards Graduation
- The dropout rate for at-risk middle school students served by CIS was 0.1%, compared to 0.7% in Georgia in 2007;
- 93.8% of at-risk high school students served by CIS stayed in school or graduated
Attendance
72.4% of students missing 10 days or more per year prior to CIS improved their attendance.
Average Gain: Students increased their average daily attendance to 92.3% during CIS from 89.1% prior to entry in the program, an average gain of 5.6 days of attendance per year.
Discipline
74.2% of students with disciplinary problems resulting in suspension prior to CIS improved their behavior.
Average Change: Students averaged 4.3 suspensions per year prior to CIS and 2.3 during CIS, an average decrease of 2 suspensions per year.
42% of students with a history of disciplinary problems prior to CIS participation remained suspension-free during the 2007-2008 school year.
