Promising Practices
Decatur County
Martha Hawthorne, Decatur County CIS Executive Director, improved math scores in her county by working with her local Board of Education to develop an after-school math program for middle school girls and boys. Math curriculum coaches worked with consultants to make the program interesting and relevant to the students. Students gain a better understanding of geometry, go on field trips (organized by the Chamber of Commerce) and learn practical lessons on how math is used in real life. Math scores have shown a 20% improvement rate (based on pre and post measurement tools).
