CIS and PLC FEATURE
Currently, there are 29 Performance Learning Centers (PLCs) in Georgia. Click here to find one near you. All have service learning projects, need volunteers (mentors/tutors), internship opportunities, and donations. Below are two service learning projects that received funding from Georgia Natural Gas.

Judith Hendrix, the English instructor at the Cobb County PLC has instituted a service learning project called Pennies For Peace. The teacher thought her students should learn that students in other countries don’t have the same educational opportunities. Additionally she wanted her students to learn about kids in different cultures, particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and that they aren’t all interested in becoming terrorists, and most want an education. She uses a book entitled Three Cups of Tea during her class instruction. Students learn that pennies can help build schools, and each penny buys a student one pencil, and a $1 a day pays for a teacher. The students began a Pennies For Peace campaign to raise money to help educate kids in the region.
Sumter PLC’s service learning project involves students working at a local computer business. Students gain practical experience as they apply some of the theories they learn writing programs, fixing computers, and working on websites.
With the help of additional sponsors, similar service learning projects could be instituted with other PLCs and other regions of the world.
